oppression by apron

17 May

I was baking something the other day – cake or a loaf of bread or what have you – when I looked down and realized I was covered in flour.  It dawned on me that, if only I had been wearing an apron, this never would have happened.  Granted, a little flour here and there is not fatal.  But I can’t count the number of times that I have left our kitchen covered in grease splatters or smears of buttercream frosting.  Why?  When did aprons go out of fashion?  My grandma had a drawerful of them, and I remember wearing one when I was very small and “helping” in the kitchen.  It was probably like playing dress up more than anything else, trying to find the prettiest apron to flaunt.

This got me thinking.  Why doesn’t my mother wear any aprons?  Was this a women’s liberation thing?  Are aprons symbols of oppression, of women chained to domestic duties, of the need to look fantastically feminine at any given moment?  Or were they just too dowdy for women of the 70s and onward?

Whatever aprons were thirty years ago, right now I think one would certainly come in handy for my messy self.  And, um, could this be any more adorable?
